Better To Be Safe Than Sorry – Quick Roof Repair Safety Tips

AdminRoofing1 commentJune 20, 2017

The roof is considered to be the most dangerous section of a building to work on and they all require maintenance and/or repairs on an annual basis. For the sheer level of danger and risk of injury many people whilst looking after the maintenance of the majority of their home themselves but decide to consult a professional Adelaide Roofing Repair Company to cater for any repairs and maintenance required on their roof. If you do choose to have a go or even just do a quick inspection here’s some initial tips to start you off.

Safety must always be your first priority. If you skip over any of these essential factors because you’re keen to get started or for emergency reasons, there’s a bigger chance that an accident could happen – so never push your luck? Roofing is one of the most dangerous professions and on average two workers a month lose their lives when working at heights in Australia and over 8,000 a year are injured. We cannot stress enough for you to take these precautions seriously to avoid serious injury.

General Safety

  • Make sure your work area is prepared, clear and access by pets and children is eliminated.
  • Identify any potentially dangerous hazards in and around your work area, such as power lines and unsafe roof access areas.
  • If the roof is wet or slippery, don’t risk it.
  • Extreme hot or cold temperatures are not ideal conditions for roofing works. Shingles may become damaged which will prevent them from sealing or lying properly in extreme temperatures.
  • Always wear soft-soled footwear for best traction Ladder safety

Here are some important safety guidelines when using ladders:

  • Damaged ladders should never be used.
  • Read and follow all the manufacturers’ warning labels on the ladder
  • All ladder have a maximum load rating – never exceed this.
  • Avoid electrical hazards by looking for overhead power lines before handling a ladder. Never use a metal ladder near power lines
  • Always maintain 3 points of contact on the ladder while climbing- two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand. Keep your weight near the center of the rungs and always face the ladder while climbing.
  • Ladders and their accessories should only be used for their intended purpose.
  • Check the rungs, steps or feet for any slippery material.
  • The top rung of a ladder is not a step unless it was specifically designed for that purpose.
  • Ladders must be secured at the top or bottom to prevent any movement – only use ladders on level and robust surfaces.
  • Never reposition a ladder while a person or equipment is on it.
  • When accessing your roof, your ladder should extend a minimum of 1 metre above the gutter or leave at the point of support. Remember not to stand on any rung that sits above the point of support.
  • When using an extension ladder, double check that all the locks are firmly engaged.
  • Make sure your work area is within arm’s reach while working from standing on the ladder.
  • Never leave a ladder unattended. If you consequently don’t feel up to the work at hand and you start to do look for the best Adelaide roofing contractor, ensure that you fully research important information linked to any Adelaide roofing company’s safety standards while at work. We never want to see anybody fall from a roof and injure themselves or even worse, lose their life so look out for these important factors.

Make sure the required insurance policy protection is in place with any Adelaide Roofing Company

Adelaide roofing contractors should have a comprehensive building and public liability insurance to ensure a project before starting to work. You may also want to consider getting insurance independently for your own needs. This ensures you will be protected from any accident and injury risk associated with the maintenance and repair works. Whether it is a simple roof leak repair or a complete roof replacement it is essential you are protected from any major problem that could occur. You can be assured that GT Roofing has been carrying out roof replacements in Adelaide with every possible insurance in place.

Safety in homes during repairs

Safety is normally associated with your Adelaide roofing contractor working on top of the roof, but it is vital to also consider your family living in the house. You will want to continue your daily routine whilst your roof is being repaired with no cause for concern. In general roofs are not structurally sound and can easily give in to a roof repairer’s weight and come crashing into rooms below them. It is advised that rooms under any roof sections that are being repaired should be cleared and vacated. GT Roofing will work with you to make sure our works do not get in your way.

Consider the weather before conducting repairs

To avoid complicating your living situation any repairs or maintenance should be completed during the summer or dry months as winter or wet season isn’t the most conducive time to carry out roof repairs. The risk of accidents increases and it exposes the building to the elements. Roof replacements in Adelaide need to be scheduled well in advance and GT Roofing is here to guide you through the process.

Only hire certified and qualified roofing companies as they are equipped with the correct tools and experience to perform the required roof maintenance and repairs.
