A popular trend in the 1980s was the Decramastic roof, however over time, this type of roof has proven to be troublesome and not the great idea it started out with. So, what should you do if you have a Decramastic roof? Read on as we talk about what a Decramastic Roof is, how to look after it, and when it’s time to replace it.
What
Decramastic Roof sheets are a lightweight material that is then coated with bitumen to look like a cement roof tile, or a group of them. Given the light, but not durable nature of the sheets, Decramastic roof sheets are prone to damage from foot traffic, weather and they tend to leak quite easily.
Why
Decramastic roofs often have asbestos inside them, a material known to cause cancer, and is banned in most building materials. Whilst its stable until its broken, asbestos should just generally be avoided. On top of this, the life span of this roof material is relatively short. It really doesn’t take much to damage the roof, a light storm or even just walking on the roof can cause significant damage, and in Australia where there is nothing light about our storms, Decramastic roofs really are not suitable.
When
There are two options. You can either look to replace your roof when it starts to present with problems, or you can replace it proactively. The former leaves you open to a surprise roof repair or replacement, which are costly. Whereas the proactive option allows you a little time to save funds and prepare for a replacement.
