Maintaining your COLORBOND® Roof is easier than you think!

AdminGuttering, Roofing1 commentDecember 4, 2018

Your roof is the largest component of your home and shoulders the largest burden of keeping out the elements. It also makes up the largest portion of exterior appearance and in turn can be costly to remodel, repair or replace; making maintaining your roof one of the most important tasks for any homeowner. You could be forgiven for thinking your roof is a scary place to be, the number of incidents each year involving roofing works is a concerning number, however with a few safety items in place, you can safely maintain your COLORBOND® roof this summer.

Your roof is an investment for your home, with proper maintenance, your roof could potentially live long past the 50-year life expectancy for COLORBOND® steel roofs. Roofs are not a set and forget piece of your home, they require regular work and maintenance and keeping an eye on your roof helps you detect and resolve problems in your roof before they become costly or disastrous. Read on for some of our best tips to maintaining and extending the lifetime of your COLORBOND® steel roof.

Regular inspections

Best part about most roofs is you can inspect it from the ground. These sight inspections are easily done, by checking for debris build up around the guttering or on the surface depending on your pitch and should be done at least every two to three months. At least once a year, you should take a closer look at the roof though, with the proper protective gear and safety awareness you can check the roof yourself. Alternatively, give us a call at GT Roofing and we can help you out with a roof health check. We can spot the problem areas you might not see, and we have all our own equipment and being on a roof is second nature. So, if you are nervous about being on the roof, call a professional.

Gutters

We cannot stress enough how important cleaning your gutters out is. The build-up of debris from blocked gutters can cause several issues, starting with rotting the gutters to causing flooding and rainwater to flow back into your ceiling causing mould and water damage. Not to mention, Australia is prone to bushfires and whilst COLORBOND® has developed measures to prevent fires from taking hold of COLORBOND® steel, nothing is impervious if the fire is hot enough. All you need is a few flying embers from a bushfire and a gutter full of dead and dry leaves to start a devastating fire.

Avoid Other Metals

This one is simple, keep other metals away from your roof and if making small repairs, use the same material as your roof. Metals can corrode each other and weaken the structure, and your roof is the last structure you want to weaken.

Repair Work

Found a damaged spot on one of your COLORBOND® sheets? Contact your local supplier to replace the sheet. Beware the urge to spray paint or fix the damage with an inferior product as you may make the problem worse instead of resolving it; costing you more in the long run. Always match the material of the roof when making repairs.

Use Caution

Most roofs are ok to access and walk on to inspect, remember soft shoes are recommended for COLORBOND® steel roofs and if in doubt check your house plans to see if the roof has been designed to be walked on. Otherwise, contact a professional roofer who has all the necessary equipment and safety training to access any roof; like the team at GT Roofing.
